It is with great pleasure that I officially announce to you the launch of the IANSA Survivors Network as a new space in our community to strengthen our advocacy for survivors’ rights and gun violence prevention, building on the long-term experience and efforts of survivors working with IANSA all over the world.

From its early days, IANSA has advocated for victims of gun violence and has opened spaces for their participation. This has been particularly the case in relation to the Arms Trade Treaty and UN Program of Action contexts. Survivors’ rights and victims assistance are important elements in today’s global disarmament/arms control and armed violence agenda.

There is an increasing awareness of the different aspects of the victims/survivors issue within the UN and in other intergovernmental organisations, also reflected in the activities of civil society organisations. Some of these have made important contributions to the work for the rights and needs of the survivors of gun violence, through their analytical and lobbying work, advocacy and research, towards an integral legal, political and institutional framework–at the local, national, regional and international levels. This work relies on the active participation of survivors as lobbyists and “sensitisers” about the direct and indirect effects of gun violence.

The Survivors Network is truly an opportunity for us to join hands and raise our voices.

Finally, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Hector Guerra and I am from Mexico. I have joined the IANSA Secretariat team as the IANSA Survivors Network Coordinator. My role is to make the role of survivors visible, effective, sustainable, and for the Survivors Network to be truly survivor- and southern-led.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you want to find out more about the Survivors Network and be involved in its plans. My email address is: survivors@iansa.org and I look forward to hearing from you.
